Gabby Graduates: A Year of Growth, Play, and Progress

by | May 20, 2025 | Impact Stories

Gabby first started her journey with SEBS a little over a year ago, and she was exhibiting some of the same challenges that many young children with autism experience. She had a hard time with transitions, didn’t know how to play with friends, and wasn’t too fond of the word “work.” Her behaviors often got in the way of learning and interacting with others. She couldn’t always effectively communicate, which led to frustration for her that often resulted in big behaviors.

But Gabby worked hard, her parents and family support team were dedicated to the process, and her  RBTs and BCBA gave her the tools she needed to succeed.

Gabby has made incredible progress. Through an in-clinic/in-home hybrid model of individualized ABA  therapy mixed with her participation in social skills groups, Gabby learned to express her wants and needs. Now, instead of becoming frustrated or shutting down, she can say, “I need help,” or “Can I have a  break?” The skills that are so important for success in all areas of her life.

One of the most exciting milestones for Gabby has been that she is now fully potty trained! This was a huge step for her independence and confidence, and it opened up even more opportunities for her to participate in age-appropriate activities. Everyone was so proud of her and this BIG accomplishment!

In the beginning, group time and peer play were tough for Gabby. She showed interest in being with her friends, but she didn’t like to share, struggled with cooperative activities, and preferred to just be with the adults. But with practice, patience, and the right support, Gabby began to enjoy playing with others.  She learned to take turns, follow the group routine, and ask peers to join her in activities. She now participates in group settings with confidence, and she’s even part of our school readiness program, which has set her up to head off to a regular education preschool.

One of the factors that has led to Gabby’s success is the way her family embraced the process. Several family members worked closely with the ABA team, learning the strategies that worked best for Gabby and using them at home to create consistency and support. Their dedication played a huge role in where she is today.

This month, we were able to celebrate Gabby’s graduation from our ABA program. She’s ready to take on the next adventure, and we know she’ll continue to shine. She’s made new friends, learned new skills,  and discovered her voice.

We are so proud of Gabby! Her journey is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see all the wonderful things her future holds.
